Installing LINUX(Ubuntu) in your PC

Hello
Since a lot of people were facing difficulties installing linux (ubuntu in particular) on their computers we thought of putting up the detailed instructions first.

Installation procedure of Ubuntu 10.04(or any version of Ubuntu) is as follows.

Requirements
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 6 GB Hard disk space
  • Bootable CD or USB stick containing Ubuntu 9 or higher(You can download UBUNTU 10.04 ISO here)
  • In general, a relatively new computer and some basic knowledge on software installation.
Steps :
  • Boot from live CD or Bootable USB drive
Switch on your system with  CD/DVD inserted into the disk drive or USB flash drive plugged in.
Press F12 /F8 / F2(it depends on your system) quickly to enter system setup menu. Then select the drive(CD/DVD or USB) from which you want to boot using navigation keys and press ENTER.
The system shall then boot from the cd/usb. Your screen now should be something like this or else something is wrong and start over again from the beginning.

Now you will have to wait till the boot completes, and a window will be displayed asking you to select the language(the language for the installation process) along with two other options,Try Ubuntu & Install Ubuntu.
Select the language required and we suggest you to try ubuntu beforehand to gain a first hand experience of it. In case you wish to do so, select 'Try Ubuntu' and please explore it and try to acquaint yourself with it.

Note:
All the screen shots shown here are from the installation of Ubuntu 10.04. There may be variations(pictorially) but nonetheless the directions remain the same with slight exceptions.
And the swiftness of booting, loading or installation depends on your system hardware.

Shown below is a typical Ubuntu desktop.Feel free to explore ubuntu, there are examples which give you a peek into ubuntu. If you are not satisfied with Ubuntu you can switch off your system using the shutdown icon provided at the right hand top corner.

To start the installation process, double click on the 'Install Ubuntu10.04 lts' icon and a window similar to the one shown in following screen, pops out.

Here select your language(the actual language of Ubuntu) and click Forward . You will be shown a window like this now..

Select your country and time zone by clicking on the map or from dropdown menu given below the map...

Click Forward.

Select your keyboard layout in this window. It is preferable to use the default settings (USA)

Then you'll be prompted with the following window.
This is where most people falter and screw up their systems. A little more attention wouldn't go to waste.
It shows how your hard disk is partitioned and their sizes can be known. Please try to understand what is being shown and any mistake here might lead to you losing all your data.

Select the last option Specify partitions manually(advanced) . This option is recommended for DUAL BOOT . That is, if you wanna install Ubuntu along with Windows then you need to select this option.
The first option looks pretty simple enough, but do not select it unless you really know what you are doing.
Click Forward.

You can now see the following window..

This shows your Hard Disk structure. You'll see all partitions which are present in your Hard Disk. Select a partition in which you wanna install Ubuntu (If you don't have any idea about partition and creating a partition click here).here /dev/sda9 is the partition on which we are installing ubuntu.
if what you see is not similar to the above pic i,e. if you dont have any partitions of type ext4 or ext3 then you'l need to visit the above link which describes how to create partitions.
once you've selected, double click on that partition or click the change button below. You'll get a dialog box as shown...

Enter size of the new partition in Mb. From Use as:  combo box select                  ext4 journaling file system (ext3 for Ubuntu 9.1 or lower versions).

Click Format the partition and select mount point to /
(from last drop down menu)
    Click OK

    Now you'll see this...
Here you need to create swap partition (If you wanna know the purpose of swap partition , send a mail to this address)
2GB is enough for swap partition. Follow the same procedure for creating swap partition . But in that dialog box select Use as: Linux swap/swap area .

Click Forward .  You'll get this ....
Fill all the required information and click Forward

this step is required if you have other OS on your system and want to import the accounts in them.
Now you are only one step behind installation ...

Before installing check out all details you have done till now. If you are not sure of anything, then you can go back and do any modifications.
Then click Install

Now installation starts ...

This may take some time(Depends on your system speed) . During this installation time you can minimize this window and you can do whatever you want(like Browsing etc) ...
After completion of installation you'll see a message box

Select Restart Now . Now your system will get restarted. Remove CD/USB stick.
when the system reboots, you'l be presented with list of all the OS on you system. This is the GRUB. Select the OS you want to start.
on selecting  Ubuntu from GRUB(for more details about grub contact us)
Now you'll get this login screen

the username and password is the same that you provided during the installation.
After successful login you'll see UBUNTU 10.04 desktop

Thats it!! Now you have UBUNTU on your system !!

we welcome your comments and queries...
